Built strategically on the north bank of the river Tagus, between 1514 and 1520, to defend the bar of Lisbon, is one of the jewels of the architecture of the reign of King Manuel I.
In the architectural ensemble we can separate two distinct bodies, models of military architecture: the medieval keep and the modern bulwark that, with two levels for artillery firing, allowed a farther shot, flush and in rebound on the water.
It is classified by UNESCO as Cultural Heritage of All Humanity in 1983.
